Common Questions and Answers

Can anyone join? Yes! We have everyone from 3 year old white belts to 65 year old black belts. We have students at all different ability levels and many students with various disabilities. Martial arts training can be especially beneficial to students with ADD, Autism, ADHD, anger management issues, and various learning disabilities.

When is the next session? We have rolling admissions, which means we can accept new students whenever they are ready.

Is this religious? No. While there are some Asian philosophies passed down in training (ie, the value of hard work, respect for elders, etc) martial arts is not a religion, and will not affect the religion of anyone who practices it. We have students who train here from many faiths and also those from no faith at all.

What styles do you teach? We have two main focii. The first is the World Taekwondo Federation (Kukkiwon) style Taekwondo, also known as the Olympic style Taekwondo. We also teach American Freestyle Karate, a unique blend of ITF Taekwondo and Kempo.  Also employed are techniques from many other styles for our practical self defense and weapons parts of the curriculum. These include Brazilian ju-jitsu, kali, judo, hapkido, and kickboxing.

How young do you take students? We start taking children at 3 years old in our Little Tigers program. Students enroll in our regular program around 5 and a half years old.

Do you require contracts? We do not require contracts, however most of the students are on them. A contract is a legal document that reflects a commitment between you and the school. We commit to giving you quality training for a certain period of time and you commit to try hard and keep up your training.

What’s the difference between Taekwondo and Karate? Although they are both similar, there are several differences. Taekwondo is an Olympic sport while the World Championships for Karate are sponsored by a private organization (ISKA). Taekwondo almost exclusively uses kicking techniques and focuses on strength, power, and cardio. Karate combines hand and foot techniques with a focus on speed, agility, and accuracy.  Further, while it is believed both martial arts originated in India, Karate is considered to come from Japan and Taekwondo is a Korean martial art.

Why should I train there rather than somewhere else? There are several reasons. The first is that our track record is unmatched by other schools. We have a 28 year history and many of the other schools in the state have instructors who came from KAT and Championship Karate. We blend the traditional aspects of martial arts with new technological innovations to give the students the best possible training.

School History

 A Tradition of Excellence

CKTKD has a long and varied school history! Our school offers the unique combination of Championship Karate's American Freestyle Karate and Korean Academy of Taekwondo's Olympic Style Taekwondo. Both schools have over 25 years of history independently and have trained numerous state, national, and international champions.

Championship Karate was started 25 years ago by Sensei Troy McCaskell, who trained under Cecil Peoples, one of the first ever full-contact karate fighters.   Sensei Troy was a three time world champion in karate and worked as the fight choreographer on three movies.

Korean Academy of Taekwondo was started 28 years ago by Grandmaster Jai Kyo Chung, who trained in Korea and was a member of the Korean Green Berets.  Grandmaster Chung has also won numerous national and international titles.

What We Teach

Here at CKTKD, we think that there are three critical components of training.

The first component is the Traditional Martial Arts Component. Here we practice the forms, weapons, and board breaking techniques that are practiced all over the world and have been practiced and passed down through the generations. The emphasis here is on power, accuracy, and technical proficiency. There is not much evolution of technique in this component.

The second component is the Sport Component. Here we compete in the Olympic sport of Taekwondo as well as Sport Karate. We follow the competition rules that limit available techniques. Because competition is done in a public venue, techniques evolve rapidly as people see what works and what doesn’t. The emphasis is on speed and utility.

The third component is the Practical Self Defense Component. Here we practice our hapkido, boxing, grappling and other associated techniques. There are no ‘rules’ in the street situation and the supreme ideal of this component is utility— whether or not a given technique works in a given situation. Thus techniques evolve fairly rapidly in this component as well.
